EXHIBITION BENEATH PARIS

Soiree at Les Caves, Paris.
Friday 13th April 2007

www.lescaves.org

Emma and Liam Sharp, along with Pat Mills and Olivier Ledroit, travelled to Paris with books and paintings for what turned out to be an underground Gothic Soiree rather than the usual comic event. Fortunately Emma was already dressed for the occasion and signed a few books, drew a few sketches, posed for some photos and broke a few hearts - and a good time was had by all! See the photos here.

JUST WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS... AN EMMA DOLL!!!

Ok - bear in mind this is just what I hear on the grapevine and nothing's been confirmed yet but a toy company is very interested in making Mam Tor/Event Horizon toys based on characters from the books and peripheral Mam Tor activities such as Zombie Elvis and yes, there is discussion of an Emma Simcock-Tooth toy!!!

Now, everyone who knows Emma has known all along that it was just a matter of time - just imagine it, changeable removable hair, and accessories just like the real thing, a floatilla of miniature pampered show-hens and authentic oversized luggage for all the other Mam Tor characters to carry for her!

Fingers crossed!

AFTER LESS THAN 24 HOURS IN FRANCE EMMA'S IN THE PAPERS!

Rough translation:

"Fanatical/passionate about comic strips?

At 8am yesterday (oh yes..) some enthusiasts were already waiting in front of the Public Square for the opening of the first comic strip and graphic art expo. This is set to continue this Sunday.

There has been an impressive audience since the opening of the expo where people can discover comic strip authors and material - a shop which has allowed Emma (above), English artist/designer, to discover France for the first time!"

Emma has returned from a very succesful and enjoyable Salon de la Bande dessinée et des Arts Graphiques de Roubaix. The biggest difference she discovered was just how polite and "gallant" the French are and how much better-dressed the comic audience is there! Rather than being the stereotypical "comic geeks" the audience were families, middle-class people, older people, a real mixture and the gap between "Fine Art" and comic art is much smaller there, where comic art is valued much more highly by a wider audience. Plus, with a European convention its all expenses paid all the way!

Additionally, Emma stuck out like an even sorer thumb in France than she usually does in the UK because in Roubaix and Lille she was very much "the only goth in the village"! She made some very good friends - (Hi Emily! Hi David! Hi JJ! Hi Marlene and everyone else! Thanks for looking after us!)

Emma hopes to do more European cons in the future, even though travelling with paintings is hard work!

RETROSPECTIVE SHOW!

Always planning ahead, Emma is now preparing for what promises to be a major retrospective solo show in Hertfordshire around october 2008! More info in due course!

Friday 2nd June, Museum “La Piscine” in Roubaix: introduction of the Salon

edit: Thankyou to all who attended, for your patience during our increasingly bizarre panels and a big hello especially to the lovley girls from Sweatdrop Studios!

BEST GRAPHIC NOVEL AWARD!

Event Horizon (the graphic novel anthology extravaganza that Emma's work forms a part of) has won the Best Graphic Novel Award at Sci-Fi-London 2006 (aka. The 5th London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film)

"The inaugural Sci-Fi-London Award for the Best Comic/Graphic Novel has been awarded to Event Horizon from Mamtor Publishing. Described as 21st Century Pulp Fiction, it is an independently published anthology of short stories by some of the UK's (and world’s) best writers and artists in the comics field. The anthology is divided into three sections: Fantastic, Gothic and Future Science and each features has an eclectic mixture of stories and artwork. The judging panel awarded the prize to Event Horizon because they felt that, apart from the quality of the content, it truly captured the spirit of the Festival by supporting and presenting high-quality, independent, original works that would not normally get a showing anywhere else. BACK FROM BRIGHTON COMIC EXPO 2005

See the gallery here!

What a lovely weekend! Emma and the Event Horizon crew shunned sleep entirely during a surprisingly sunny late november weekend to bring their unique creativity and party atmos to the Comic Expo at the Hilton amid the marble staircases and chandeliers.

Emma's paintings (YES, they're paintings and NO she didnt just pose for some man to paint them - incase you didn't get that the first 300 times round!!) hung at the Mam Tor table while drawing and booksigning and the odd bit of dalek-baiting ensued... dont ask... Emma's costume drew much attention and she took part in interviews and panels too. The book is fantastic and is now available and sold just under one copy for every 10 guests at the huge event!

BRIGHTON COMIC EXPO 2005

Emma will be attending Comic Expo 2005 in Brighton (nov 19-20th, Hilton Metropole hotel). She will be easy to spot at the Mam Tor stand as she will be the one on Victorian costume as seen in the book! She will be available for booksigning and posing for photos and will as usual do everything in her power not to do sketches for punters as she hates working under pressure! There will also be a big panel event where the creators of EVENT HORIZON will be speaking and taking questions. Hopefully it will run more smoothly as I've been told it will have been planned - or at least thought about - more than 2 mins in advance!

The proofs of the book have arrived and I can tell you they look amazing! (even though Emma looks a bit sunburnt on one of her pages!) The book will be much bigger and better this time around!

Emma is now confirmed on the official guestlist and looks forward to meeting you all!

AND DON'T FORGET - IT'S EMMAS BIRTHDAY ON NOVEMBER 9TH!!!

EMMA'S FIRST EXHIBITION ABROAD! AMADORA COMICS FESTIVAL, PORTUGAL. OCTOBER 23rd 2005

Emma has been quietly hoping that she will get to show someting outside of her home country of the UK for some time now and at last it's happened! Today, thursday 13th oct, a courier is taking the few paintings she could find (2!) that weren't on ridiculously huge canvasses to Portugal.

She will be showing alongside some of her Event Horizon teammates including Liam Sharp and Dave Kendal at the Amadora Comics Festival.

Comments on Event Horizon one:

SFX Magazine
"There's a wonderful whiff of comic socialism in the air. A bunch of writers and artists have come together and decided not to wait for the big companies to invite them to play and instead they've published for themselves. Commendable? Definitely… Mam Tor: Event Horizon is a quality spot of pulp fiction in comic form."

MAXIM US
“Fantasy tales and imagery too arresting to ignore… bizarre, funny, and visionary narratives in the horror, sci-fi, and zombie-Viking-Elvis genres. The art is every bit as left-field as the writing, with rich depictions of savage brutes, neo-Nazis, and hot goths in the spirit of Heavy Metal magazine.”

EMERALD CITY
“The future of British comics just sort of fell into my lap.”

BRIGHTON COMIC EXPO 2005

Emma has just read online (they're saying lovely things on this forum!) that she is expected to attend Comic Expo 2005 in Brighton (nov 19-20th, Hilton Metropole hotel). This is the first she's heard of it but, yes, she'd love to go! Presumably it will be panels and booksignings again (sighs casually...)

EMMA GOES HEAD TO HEAD WITH NOTORIOUS TV CHEF GORDON RAMSAY

It's a scorching hot day and Emma has just returned from La Gondola restaurant in Derby where she has been filmed painting as part of TV programme Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. Her job was to add a miniature portrait of the restaurant's new owner to an already existing mural. She had to do a mock walk-in and pretend to re-meet Gordon - but their actual meeting was very different! "when I pulled up outside the Gondola I saw 2 men stood on the steps and asked if they were part of the TV crew - it was only later on that I realised on of the 2 men might be him and asked someone for confirmation!" Emma, who never watches TV if she can help it but had heard of the "angry chef who swears at everyone" and was fully prepared for a fight, has now redubbed him "the friendly chef who flirts OUTRAGEOUSLY with everyone".

He claimed to be surprised at his reputation and keen to prove he wasn't nasty and didn't appear to be put off of Emma by her natural unconsious male-ego-smashing abilities...

Emma is also painting a more formal portrait of Gordon to be presented to him by La Gondola.

The show will be aired in the coming months. He was very pleased with Emma's work and he said he'll be looking at this website soon - so, Hi Gordon!!!

MORE EVENT HORIZON BOOK SIGNING!

Event Horizon has been declared a runaway success! At the booksigning at Bedford's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS bookshop it was revealed that Event Horizon was the fastest selling book they'd ever had; major distributors are putting in reorders as they are selling out and the book is approaching the very real possibility of a second print run!

Now you can see the all new galleries of the Bristol Launch and the Close Encounters signing!

Plenty of plans are underway for volume 2 and Emma is confirmed to be among the artists contributing - this time she will be writing her own story (a first for her!) and making all the paintings for the story (rather than having a story written around existing paintings, as was the case the first time round) the title will remain A Trace Of Fragile Bliss as in the first volume.

EVENT HORIZON IS HERE!

EVENT HORIZON is now available in shops in the UK and the US and is in process of being translated into Italian!

Emma enjoyed a weekend in sunny Bristol signing copies of the book at the Comic Expo with the other Mam Tor artists and even did a few sketches for lucky punters and suceeded in saying very little at the panel.

Perhaps best of all, when she left the Expo for her lunch in a local pub she was greeted with the sight of her own face on the beermats! (See beermats etc in scrapbook)

PREVIEWS

Here is the p/review of the Event Horizon mook below in this months Diamond Previews comic industry magazine - yes Emma is mentioned by name (!!) and again here in this review at Mile High Comics!

Click here to see pics of the HUGE pull-out advert in Previews magazine!

The book was also "staff pick"! Here's the review:

Recommended by Robert Randle. Mark your calendars for May for the greatest anthology I've seen in a long time! Slick and savage, brutal and beautiful, everything in Event Horizon is gold. I could go on and on about the work of big name contributors like Liam Sharp, Ashley Wood, and Steve Niles, or entice you with the prospect of seeing the first time work of creators whose stuff you will definitely see again, but they'd just be words. Like the black hole definition, where no information of events occurring inside the event horizon can escape to the outside, there's nothing I can say that will do it justice. You have to see this book for yourself. It is aptly named, for reading this book is an event, and May is just on the horizon!
