Can you handle ASP (Active Server Pages) or pages created using applications like Cold Fusion?

Answer: In early October, 2002, Artists-In-Residence.org will be placed on a server that supports ASP. We will begin offering residents the option of using ASP at that time. However, neither my assistant nor I know enough about it to be able to help a resident if s/he has a problem. The resident who use ASP must be able to do so without our intervention.

If you are not certain about whether A-I-R can support your site's requirements, please contact the Landlady to inquire.

Do you use MS Frontpage?

Answer: FrontPage can be enabled for residents on Artists-In-Residence.net only. We will enable it if requested on the A-I-R application.

Why don't you allow emailing or shell access on Artists-In-Residence?

Answer: When A-I-R first opened, we gave residents full shell access and email capabilities. Unfortunately, it did not take long before someone took advantage and used the service to spam. We had no option but to discontinue the feature.

A-I-R was never intended to be a full-service host, anyway. Its purpose is much like the old Victorian houses used by artists many years ago. It is a starting point for those in the Arts and Humanities who are trying to get going on the Web. Like those boarding houses from long ago, A-I-R serves as a shelter for those who had limited funds or other resources or who simply want to be in a community with other artists. Once a resident grows beyond the capabilities of the service, s/he is hopefully ready to move on and make the investment in the features needed to keep succeeding.

Can I use Netscape to upload my pages?

Answer: I'm afraid not. Uploading via the PUT method in Netscape's Publish feature is presently not allowed by the server. Try using an FTP software such as WS_FTP.

Can you host my domain on Artists-In-Residence?

Answer: I host domains through my business, A Touch of Classics. If you choose to have me host your domain, I will exempt you from the house rule regarding direct links so that you can still have a presence on A-I-R. You may also want to consider using a domain hosting service that will forward from their service to your actual site at Artists-In-Residence. There are several, such as New.net, http://www.directNIC.com, and www.free-domainhosting.com.

Would a resident lose any rights control to Artists-In-Residence?

Answer: Absolutely not! A-I-R is merely a Web host and does not claim any copyright to any resident's work. I recommend, in fact, that residents include a statement in the body of each page regarding what permissions, if any, they grant for use of their material by visitors to their sites.

Do you sell the information you get from the resident application?

I do not sell or give out *any* information about my residents. Nor do I spam them myself. Any information I receive is solely for recordkeeping, and I contact residents only when something happens that could affect their ability to use the service. I even take it to the point of using only residents' email forwarding addresses (youruserid@artists-in-residence.com) on the directory and leave it up to residents to decide whether they use that address or another on their sites. A complete statement is available on the Privacy Page.

May I use a language other than English for my site?

Answer: Effective June 13, 1999, Artists-In-Residence will no longer accept non-English language sites because of the need to verify that all sites are abiding by the restriction on adult sites and the other rules of the service. I do make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.

Does the Landlady have an alternate address if the system goes down?

Answer: Yes. If you can not reach me at landlady@artists-in-residence.com, you should try randye@atouchofclassics.com.

Can I pay for more Web space or make a donation via credit card?

Answer: You can go to: http://www.artists-in-residence.com/landlady.html and scroll down to the paypal button at the bottom of the page if you wish to pay for space or make a donation. BTW, donations are not tax-deductible.

How can you afford to host my site for free?

Answer: I wish I could say because I'm independently wealthy. In reality, however, it's because I keep the costs to a minimum by doing most of the site maintenance work myself, and I take advantage of others' free or very inexpensive services. I welcome support from residents and guests by encouraging them to use the Emporium to purchase books, music, etc. The Emporium can be reached at:

Thank you for coming. I hope that you will return soon.
